Jeffrey Mace (a.k.a. Patriot) was appointed by the President to be the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. after S.H.I.E.L.D. began working with the U.S. government again and Coulson expressed that he wanted to have a known hero as the new face of S.H.I.E.L.D. as they became a public organization again.
Mace claims to be an Inhuman, but the truth is that the source of his super-strength is actually a special strength-enhancing drug. Upon having his secret discovered by Coulson, Mace willingly agrees to return the authority to lead S.H.I.E.L.D. back to Coulson while he stays with the title and deals with the politics of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the public eye (as suggested by Coulson himself).
Mace was killed while they were both inside the Framework.
Early History Edit
Mace was credited as a hero when he risked his own life to save the lives of others during a bombing of the U.N. in Vienna. However, Mace confesses to Coulson that he didn't save anyone in Vienna; a picture of him taken out of context spread the rumor he was a hero and Mace just went along with it.
After Coulson stepped down as director, he only asked the President to make the new director a powered person as Coulson believed the public needed a powered person they could trust. The President put Gen. Talbot in charge of finding this person, but when he couldn't Talbot formed Project Patriot with the goal of giving Mace powers.
Some of the changes Mace has made since becoming director include reinstating the security level system, only with colors instead of number. For example, May's security clearance level is red while Simmons is level orange. The reason for using colors instead of number is so agents won't feel inferior to their superiors.
Furthermore, Mace requires agents, including Simmons, to undergo daily lie detector test as part of his Widespread Information Monitoring Program (W.I.M.P.). This is to prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from being infiltrated by another organization like Hydra.
Recent History Edit
In "The Ghost," May informs Coulson and Mack that Director Mace has forbidden them from looking for Daisy, believing that she's slipped passed them too many times and Coulson may be intentionally letting her escape.
In "Meet the New Boss," Mace meets with Coulson to tell him that he's forgiven for going against orders and pursuing Daisy in Los Angeles, but reminds Coulson Daisy is a fugitive and that they don't want the public to know she's a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Also, Mace has a special assignment for Coulson which is to give a tour of the base to some visiting politicians. Mace reminds Coulson they need to impress their guests if S.H.I.E.L.D. wants more government funding.
Later, Mace fights May after the latter begins hallucinating and attacking people as an effect of the ghost virus. Mace knocks May unconscious using his super-strength; later, Coulson asks Mace what he's doing to treat May, but Mace says that it's classified.
In "Uprising," after the Inhuman Resistance causes blackouts in several cities around the world, Coulson advises Mace that it's time the public learns S.H.I.E.L.D. is back. Mace holds a press conference where he announces that S.H.I.E.L.D. has been rebuilt and is operating again. Furthermore, the blackouts were not caused by Inhumans, but rather human extremists and it was S.H.I.E.L.D. that arrested these terrorists and stopped the blackouts.
In "Lockup," Mace asks for Simmons help because he's about to have a televised debate with Senator Nadeer with the topic being the "Inhuman War on Humans." During the debate, Mace is going to wear an earpiece which will allow Simmons to provide him scientific facts that he'll use to support his argument.
During the debate, Nadeer accuses Mace of not being "the man for the job," referring to directorship of S.H.I.E.L.D. Mace then takes his earpiece out and tells Nadeer that part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s job is protecting Inhumans and integrating them into human society. Mace then reveals that he's an Inhuman on live television.
At the end of the episode, Mace has a private meeting with Nadeer. Nadeer shows Mace a video of Daisy and Ghost Rider working with Agents Coulson and Mack and she threatens to give this video to the press unless Mace does what she asks.
In "The Good Samaritan," Mace informs Simmons he has a top-secret assignment for her as a favor for the government. However, really this favor is for Senator Nadeer and Mace has no idea what exactly Nadeer wants from Simmons.
Later, while aboard Zephyr One, Coulson receives a message from Mace saying he's about to board the Zephyr in order to take Daisy and "the enhanced individual who can control fire" into custody. Coulson, however, assures Mace that Daisy and Robbie are not in the plane. Mace then thanks Coulson for not lying to him as he knows Daisy and Robbie are in the Containment Module outside the plane. Mace then has one of his men bring the module back inside the plane.
Mace then orders Coulson to turn the plane around and return to base where Daisy and Robbie will be arrested. However, Robbie overhears Fitz say they've located Elias and Robbie says he has to rescue his uncle. Robbie then transforms into Ghost Rider and breaks out of the module. Ghost Rider starts fighting Mace and is about to kill him, but Gabe begs Robbie to stop thus prompting Ghost Rider to turn back into Robbie.
In "Deals with Our Devils," after Elias's machine causes Robbie, Fitz, and Coulson to disappear, Mace believes all three of them are dead. Mack wants to go after Elias, but Mace says it's too dangerous and they first need Simmons to examine the machine Elias was using so they can understand his powers more first.
In "The Laws of Inferno Dynamics," Mack learns where Elias is and Mace tells Coulson he wants to be part of the mission to stop Elias. However, Coulson is against this idea which leads to an argument and Coulson confronting Mace about the phone call he overhead Mace making to Nadeer. Mace then explains how Nadeer is blackmailing him with pictures of Daisy and Ghost Rider working with them and how he's only working with Nadeer to protect S.H.I.E.L.D.
Coulson infiltrates Elias's hideout and, after confronting Elias, order all teams to engage. Mace, Mack, May, and the others then begin fighting with Elias's henchmen. Meanwhile, AIDA opens a transdimensional portal which Elias, his machine, and Ghost Rider all get pulled through thereby trapping them in another dimension.
After the mission, some reporters see Daisy using her powers and Mace quickly explains to them Daisy has always been an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Furthermore, Mace explains to the press that the reason he lied about Daisy quitting S.H.I.E.L.D. was because Daisy was undercover and only pretending to be a vigilante in order to gain information on the Watchdogs.
In "The Patriot", during a press conference honoring Agent Johnson's heroism, a sniper using a gun that fires exploding bullets tries to assassinate Mace. However, Daisy spots the sniper and Mace blocks the bullet using the podium. Mace is then immediately loaded onto a quinjet by Mack and Coulson and flown to a safe house. Meanwhile, the others learn that the shooter is a former Hydra agent, turned mercenary, hired by the Watchdogs.
As they're flying, a bomb goes off in the jet causing it to crash. Mack, Coulson, and Mace are all uninjured, but the pilot died in the crash and Burrows was thrown from the jet before it crashed. Furthermore, the jet's emergency signal and their cell phones are all being jammed. Mace leaves to find Burrows and Coulson and Mack go with him. However, they encounter a team of mercenaries (all former Hydra agents) working for the Watchdogs that have already found Burrows' body and are trying to open his briefcase. Mack and Coulson devise a strategy to take down the villains, but during the shootout Mace grabs the briefcase and runs off. He opens it and tries to use the serum, but one of the mercenaries smashes both vials of serum and shoots Mace in the leg before Coulson shoots him.
Mace then confesses to Mack and Coulson that he isn't in fact Inhuman; it was the serum that gave him his powers, and the last dose just wore off. The groups hides in a nearby ranger station as they see a second team of mercenaries arrive. Mace distracts them while Mack uses a grenade to blowup the truck with the jamming equipment on it. A shootout starts and Coulson comments how they only need to survive until S.H.I.E.L.D. detects the jet's emergency signal and sends reinforcements. Daisy and May then arrive and help the others fight the mercenaries.
At the end of the episode, Mace and Coulson come to compromise where Mace keeps being director and handles all the public relations, but from now on Coulson is in charge of missions.
In "BOOM," Simmons warns Mace that the serum he has been taking is potentially lethal. Ironically, at the same time, Fitz informs Mace that he just finished the upgrades to his suit to include a heart rate monitor, GPS locator, and automatic serum injector.
After Shockley lures them all into a trap, Mace allows himself to be captured by the Watchdogs to act as a diversion while the others escape.
In "The Man Behind the Shield", Ivanov tortures Mace and comments how he is going to be bait to lure in the rest of S.H.I.E.L.D. Furthermore, Ivanov says he'll keep torturing Mace until he renounces S.H.I.E.L.D. and admits S.H.I.E.L.D. only protects Inhumans. When Mace refuses to surrender, Ivanov unties Mace, says he admires his resolve, and forgives his sins. However, Ivanov comments that his comrades aren't as forgiving; a group of men then enter the room and proceed to beat Mace.
Later, Mack, Coulson, and the rest of the team arrive and successfully rescue Mace. Back at the base, however, Fitz and Simmons realize the real Mace is still being held prisoner and the Mace they rescued is an LMD android created by AIDA.
In "Self Control", it's revealed how AIDA has replaced Mace, Fitz, Mack, and Coulson with LMD androids programmed to kill all Inhumans.
After Daisy and Simmons learn the others have been replaced with LMDs, the LMD of Mace puts the base on lock down and tells the other S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel that Simmons and Daisy are the LMDs and to capture them. Daisy fights with the LMD of Mace and deactivates the android by electrocuting it.
Framework Universe Edit
The Framework is a virtual reality created by Radcliffe where AIDA imprisoned Mace. Mace and the others were all given new memories and believe the Framework is the real world.
In the Framework universe, Hydra won the war against S.H.I.E.L.D. and controls everything. Mace is the leader of the Hydra resistance and still director of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's unknown if, in the Framework, he's really Inhuman or if he's still taking his serum.
In "Identity and Change", with Ward's help, Daisy and Simmons get in contact with the resistance and are taken to their base where they meet Mace. While Mace welcomes them to S.H.I.E.L.D., Simmons notices some civilians and Mace explains how they use the base as a safe haven for suspected Inhumans wanted by Hydra.
Later, Mace confronts Simmons about why she stopped Ward from shooting The Doctor prompting Simmons to confess that they are all in a virtual world.
In "No Regrets", Coulson and Mace intercept a Hydra prison bus, only to learn the bus was only carrying body bags. Back at the base, Simmons explains to Mace the whole situation of how he was captured by the Watchdogs and what the Framework is, but he doesn't believe her.
Coulson and Mace use the bus they stole to infiltrate a Hydra Enlightenment Cultivation Center in order to rescue Trip whose being held prisoner by Hydra and has important information for them. After rescuing Trip, Mace is attacked by May who has gained temporary super strength from taking a form of Cal's formula.
After defeating May, Mace goes to retrieve Coulson, but Fitz calls in an airstrike which causes the building they're in to be bombarded with missiles. Mace uses his super strength to stop the ceiling from collapsing on them thus giving the others time to escape.
Mace dies when the building collapses and while he dies in the Framework his physical body dies in the real world as well.
Powers & Abilities Edit
The source of Mace's powers is a special serum developed by Project Patriot which Mace takes whenever he has to use his powers. Without the serum, Mace is powerless.
- Super Strength: He has demonstrated a moderate degree of superhuman strength, being able to subdue and knock out Melinda May without any seeming effort. He was able to hit Ghost Rider hard enough to have a discernible impact. Though it was revealed that he had to inject a serum to get the super strength.
- Super Durability: He has also shown a moderate degree of superhuman durability, being able to easily withstand Melinda May hitting his head with workout equipment, causing no discomfort or pain and not even a minor injury or any discernible internal damage. He survived a thirty second barrage of blows from Ghost Rider without apparent breaks or internal injuries.by a b
