Jiaying was the ex-wife of Calvin Zabo, and the mother of Daisy Johnson. She was an Inhuman gifted with great longevity (making her lifespan measured seemingly in centuries), and regeneration.

Early History Edit

It's unknown exactly how old Jiaying was as every few decades an inhuman elder was chosen as a sacrifice, and Jiaying would drain away their life force to prolong her own life and carry on the traditions of their people to the next generation.

Cal said Jiaying would scream and beg them not to force her to use her powers.

In Austria, Jiaying was taken prisoner by Hydra and forced to become a test subject for Dr. Whitehall's experiments with the Obelisk. Out of all of Whitehall's test subjects, Jiaying was the only who could touch the Obelisk and live. Thus Whitehall ordered that she be imprisoned so he could experiment on her further and learn what made her so special.

However, the S.S. R. arrested Whitehall and released all of Hydra's prisoners, including Jiaying.

Meeting Cal Edit

Jiaying was in China studying to be a doctor when she met Cal. Cal was only supposed to be in China for two weeks, but when he met Jiaying they fell in love and they eventually married. Cal opened a clinic where Jiaying worked as a translator; they planned on moving to America someday where Jiaying intended to finish medical school.

Daisy was born on July 2nd, 1988.

One day, a group of men came to Cal's clinic, calling themselves S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (really undercover Hydra agents), saying they were looking for Jiaying and they took her away. The agents took her to Austria where an elderly Dr. Whitehall was shocked to see Jiaying hadn't aged in the decades since he last saw her. Whitehall then began experimenting on Jiaying to discover the secret to her eternal youth.

Jiaying experiment

Whitehall transfused Jiaying's blood and transplanted her organs into himself thus causing his body to age backwards by decades. Whitehall then threw her into a ditch and left her for dead, but Cal found her and "sewed her back up."

Despite Cal's help, Jiaying was still on the verge of death and she asked Cal to take her to a village in the Hunan province where, with Cal's help, she killed every person in that village. With their deaths, Jiaying was able to heal herself and was back to full health.

Broken Family Edit

At some point, after the massacre of the village, Cal and Jiaying realized their daughter was missing.

Jiaying, later, learned a S.H.I.E.L.D. team was dispatched to investigate the massacre and took Daisy back with them to America. One by one, Cal tracked down every agent that was a member of that team and tortured then killed them when they refused to tell him where Daisy was.

Jiaying and Cal began traveling the world, searching for Daisy, but after searching for some time Jiaying said she woke up one morning and realized what a horrible man Cal had become. At that point, Jiaying gave up the search for Daisy and accepted the fact that they would never see their daughter again. Furthermore, Jiaying blamed Cal for not being able to protect Daisy when S.H.I.E.L.D. took her.

Jiaying then moved to Afterlife where she began teaching other inhumans how to control their powers; thinking that if she couldn't protect Daisy maybe she could protect others. Eventually, Jiaying was put in charge of choosing which inhumans would be allowed to go through terrigenesis.

Family Reunion Edit

In "Afterlife", after Gordon brings Skye to Afterlife, she gets into a fight with Raina and is about to kill her when Jiaying barges into the room and orders her to stop. Jiaying then tells Skye that whatever Raina and she were in the past doesn't matter now as they're both inhumans. Jiaying then offers to be Skye's Guide and train her to use her powers.

In "Melinda", Jiaying begins teaching Skye how to use her power, but during her training Skye comments how she doesn't know when her birthday is, and Jiaying tells Skye, thus revealing herself to be her mother. Jiaying then explains to Skye she didn't tell her right away because Skye didn't choose to go through terrigenesis, and she wanted her to choose to stay at Afterlife. Also, Jiaying warns Skye she can't tell anyone else that she's her mother as Jiaying doesn't want the other inhumans to think that she's giving Skye special treatment.

Later, Jiaying and Skye have dinner with Cal; Jiaying explains to Skye that Cal deserves this dinner for reuniting their family.

In "The Frenemy of My Enemy", Jiaying tells Skye they're sending Cal home to Milwaukee as he isn't inhuman and therefore doesn't belong at Afterlife. Skye, however, convinces her to let her go with Cal to soften the blow when they tell him he can't come back and assure him they'll come and visit. Jiaying secretly sends Lincoln to follow Cal and Skye to make sure Cal doesn't hurt her.

In "The Dirty Half Dozen", Gordon returns with Skye and Cal, and Skye explains to Jiaying that Hydra attacked them and abducted Lincoln. Skye wants to rescue Lincoln, but Jiaying says they can't as it's possible Hydra could track them back to Afterlife which would put more lives at risk. Later, Jiaying tells Cal it was a mistake to send him away and asks him if she can trust Raina; Cal warns Jiaying that Raina is dangerous and that she needs to watch her.

War with S.H.I.E.L.D. Edit

In "Scars", Raina informs Jiaying she had a new vision of a giant stone that wasn't a stone. Jiaying immediately recognizes it to be the Monolith and asks Gordon to confirm whether or not what Raina saw was real. Later, not only does Gordon discover the Monolith is real, but it's aboard The Iliad, a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship.

Later, Skye and Lincoln return to Afterlife and Skye explains to Jiaying how they were with S.H.I.E.L.D., S.H.I.E.L.D. knows where Afterlife is from tracking Gordon, and a S.H.I.E.L.D. team will be visiting. Skye assures Jiaying Coulson is a good man, but Cal warns her that S.H.I.E.L.D. can't be trusted and they can't allow a single inhuman to be put on the Index.

When Gonzales arrives with a S.H.I.E.L.D. team, Jiaying meets with him in her office. As a gift, Gonzales gives Jiaying a necklace that Whitehall took from her which S.H.I.E.L.D. found in his office after Coulson killed him. As a gift in return, Jiaying shows Gonzales a terrigen crystal and then breaks it on the table releasing the terrigen mist. As soon as the mist touches Gonzales, his body begins turning to stone and he dies.

Jiaying then takes Gonzales' gun and shoots herself twice in the shoulder with it. Jiaying then claims Gonzales tried to kill her which is why she killed him in self-defense.

In "S.O.S. Part 1", Jiaying officially declares war on S.H.I.E.L.D. and says S.H.I.E.L.D. wants to exterminate all inhumans. A S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjet then arrives and fires missiles at Afterlife; however, it's later revealed that the jet was being piloted by an inhuman who was acting under orders from Jiaying.

Later, Gordon brings Jiaying a captured S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that Jiaying drains the life out of in order to heal her wounds. Jiaying then meets with Raina and tells her she should've listened to her warning about S.H.I.E.L.D. Raina then declares she will expose Jiaying and help the inhumans see the truth, but Jiaying then stabs Raina in the neck and kills her. Jiaying then turns around realizing Skye was watching them.

Skye begins to see through Jiaying's lies, but Jiaying assures her that everything she's done was to protect their people and the war with S.H.I.E.L.D. was inevitable. Skye then declares that their people need protection from her then, suddenly, one of Jiaying's followers knocks Skye unconscious. Jiaying then orders that Skye be restrained.

At the end of the episode, Jiaying meets with Gordon aboard The Iliad, which Gordon and the other inhumans have taken control of.

In "S.O.S. Part 2", Jiaying orders Gordon to take a crate of terrigen crystals to the ship's fan room and release the terrigen mist which will kill all humans aboard the ship.

Jiaying is about to leave the ship aboard a jet with the remaining crystals when Skye confronts her. Jiaying tries to convince her that the only way to protect their people is to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D., but Skye rebuffs her and says that this war is about her hatred and her need for revenge. Jiaying then begins draining the life out of Skye, but Skye breaks free and creates a shock wave that sends Jiaying's jet over the edge of the boat into the ocean.

Jiaying then grabs Skye and begins draining her life force, but Skye grabs onto Jiaying and begins to kill her with her own powers. Cal then arrives, looks at Skye, and says "You don't have to live with that pain. I will." Cal then kills Jiaying thus keeping the promise he made to protect their daughter.

Personality Edit

Cal said that, before Whitehall experimented on her, Jiaying was compassionate and kind, but afterwards she no longer cared about human life. Cal believed if he could put their family back together and find Daisy then Jiaying would go back to her old self.

Jiaying believed Daisy was her true gift, but, after Daisy betrayed her, Jiaying realized her true gift was her ability to take life.

Powers and AbilitiesEdit

  • Life Drain: Jiaying can drain other people of their life force and thereby kill them in order to heal herself and, presumably, restore her youth.
    • Longevity: Jiaying's lifespan is far longer than a normal human's, able to live for centuries while retaining the health, vitality, and physical appearance of her prime. As admitted by Jiaying herself, she does not live forever as her age would eventually catch up, implying that she merely ages much slower than normal humans.
    • Healing Factor/Regeneration: Jiaying has a greatly accelerated healing speed. When being dissected by Whitehall, she survived long enough to receive minimal treatment by her husband and ultimately regenerate her lost anatomy with only minor scars. This, of course, raises questions about her daughter's physiology.

  • Some fans think Jiaying is still alive due to her healing powers. This theory was disproven when her corpse made an appearance towards the end of Season 5.
  • Calvin knew, deep down, that Jiayang had lost her sanity and was a "monster".
  • Possibly an inhuman MCU re-imagining of the classic X-Men villainess Selene, with the same life draining powers that have greatly extended their lives, both having whole tribes sacrificed to them, position as a leader of a secret group of powered individuals, and finally both being the mother of heroines (Magma & Quake) with earthquake/earth-related powers.

  • "Everything I've done, everything I will do is for the protection of our people."
  • "War was inevitable. I struck first so we would have the advantage."
  • "I don't want to hear about the people you think you're responsible for."
  • "We're not going to turn on you, or abandon you. This is a safe place."
  • "July second. You were born on July second."
  • Raina: "Even in the darkness, they will see the light.

         Jiaying: "No, they won't."
