Natasha Romanoff was born in Volgograd, Russia in the former Soviet Union and went on to become a world-class spy. Her birth name and family are still to be ascertained.

Natasha reportedly began training to be an assassin when she was just a child. She was recruited by Russia´s covert espionage facility(The Red Room), where she endured both an education and indoctrination into the world of spycraft. Natasha excelled in this strict training environment and soon became regarded as a master spy and one of the world´s greatest assassins. Due to both her expertise and her growing threat to global security, Romanoff quickly appeared on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar, prompting Director Fury to send Agent Barton to eliminate her. Agent Barton disobeyed this order, recognizing her skill and recommending she be recruited for S.H.I.E.L.D. At the behest of Nick Fury, Romanoff later defected from Russia and joined the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Romanoff is the Avenger most likely to have a foot in each camp, almost irrespective of the cause or nature of the split, due in large part to her ability to set aside her emotions and personal needs, and thus generally see the merits in each party's argument.

Agent Romanoff is a master in all the elements of espionage including hand-to-hand combat, interrogation, disguise, hacking encrypted computer systems and infiltrating secure locations. As part of Strike Team Delta, Romanoff now has a functioning partnership with Clint Barton. She is (in all probability) a "Level 7 S.H.I.E.L.D Agent", although this does create plot holes in the available info, and the declarations in, for example, the "Pilot" about knowledge of Coulson's 'recovery'.

Like Hawkeye and Captain America, Natasha is a frequent benchmark for S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who aspire to be among the very best. She is the point of reference, for example, for Agent Grant Ward's espionage assessment by Maria Hill.
